Week 5 Recap: Snow White Awakes

Men in Black 3's hold on the box office was short-lived, as Snow White ran over all-comers to take home the top box office spot with a solid $56 million for the weekend, eclipsing the combined efforts of MIB3 and Avengers.  At that pace, it stands to make John $20-30 mil.  Avengers continued assaulting the record books, now standing at over $550 mil in less than five weeks of release, while MIB3 appears doomed to lose Darius a sizable amount of fantasy dough.  In other box office bomb news, Battleship again dropped precipitously and is now barely making more than What to Expect When You're Expecting.  Speaking of the rom-com, it has turned a rather dire opening weekend into a nice overall take and now is likely to pull in a few million in profit.

Looking forward to this coming weekend, Ryan finally enters the competition with Madagascar 3, while Matt hopes to build off his early Avengers success with Prometheus.  Both were purchased for about $155 mil, which means for either owner to come out ahead, they need to each pull in at least $70 mil over the weekend.  Right now, HSX.com has Prometheus projected in the low $60s while Mad 3 is in the high $50s.  Considering Mad 3 is the first real kids movie of the summer, it seems likely that it will do better (or at least have more staying power) than the Ridley Scott R-rated alien flick.
